The Detailed Esoteric Explanation of the Quranic Verse from Surah Tauba [9:34]

His Holiness Younus AlGohar was requested to explain the meaning of a verse from the Holy Quran: Surah Tauba, verse number 34. This verse is commonly completely misinterpreted by Islamic scholars, and is often used by members of the Wahhabi sect in an attempt discredit Saints of God (Auliya). His Holiness's in-depth explanation is a true eye-opener!

[9:34]

The Wahabbi sect uses this verse [9:34] misleadingly to try and prove the saints wrong. They translate the two words ‘الْأَحْبَارِ وَالرُّهْبَانِ’ as priests and Sufis. For the word ‘رُّهْبَان’ (Rahban) there is a literal translation and then there is the original meaning. The literal translation means one who cuts himself off from the world and seeks hermitage in the jungle and he does so on a regular basis. Wahabbis misuse this verse against the Saints of God but it is ironic how well this verse fits the fake Sufis and fake Gurus.

We will study the meaning of this verse and divide this verse into three segments. First of all, God is giving information to the Momineen (Enlightened Ones).

The majority of the priests and mystics are those who use the wealth and belongings of people undeservedly.

The second segment we will take is:

يَصُدُّونَ عَن سَبِيلِ اللَّـهِ

To create hurdles in the way of God;

It does not mean to stop. ‘صُدُّ’ means to create a wall, to create a hurdle. So, one is to use the wealth of people undeservedly ‘بِالْبَاطِلِ’ (bil Batil) and the other is to create hurdles for people in the way of God. Thirdly, the word written in the above verse, ‘يَكْنِزُونَ’ has been derived from ‘كْنِز’ which means treasure. It means to gather gold and silver and not spend it in the way of God.

Now, in the first segment God has notified that there are many priests (أَحْبَارِ) and mystics (رُّهْبَانِ) who use people’s wealth and belongings undeservedly. If ‘bil Batil’ had not been written then it would have meant that nobody is allowed to use anybody else’s wealth. But God has objected to using people’s wealth undeservedly. What does undeservedly mean? You believe somebody to be a saint, a Friend of God, a Faqir or Dervish. Now for example, in the Hadith it is written that through auxiliary worship man can obtain such nearness to God that God becomes his hands with which he holds and God becomes his feet with which he walks. And at this stage, seeing such a person is seeing God. Hadith also state that on the Day of Judgment it will be every man for himself and suddenly a procession would pass by and people would ask which prophet is it. They would be told that it is not a prophet, it is a saint. They would say there used to be saints in our time, let us see and upon seeing the saint they would recognise him and say, ‘I fed him food’ or ‘I gave him clothes to wear.’ God would say okay and grant such people salvation. People shall obtain salvation by spending their wealth, money and belongings on the Saints of God. Therefore, spending wealth is not wrong it is a means of salvation. God has made his reservations on spending wealth on those who do not deserve it. Your inner is dark and neither are you connected to God. You are sitting as a fake Sufi and people are coming to you and giving you their wealth and you are using it, this is ‘bil Batil’. You do not deserve it and God has said it for such cases.

For instance, Tahir ul Qadri is not connected to God but it has become well-known amongst people that he is a Saint of God/Ghous/Mujaddid and therefore people give him their wealth and facilities. Tahir ul Qadri says he does not take a single penny from the funds of the Minhaj ul Quran or revenue from the books. Then where do these Land Cruisers and airfare tickets, hotels and tours come from? People give it. What do people think when they give him this wealth? Do they give it to him because they believe him to be a cleric? Does the public serve clerics in such a manner? They serve him in such a manner because they believe him to be a Saint of God, a Friend of God. But he is not a Friend of God and people are sacrificing their wealth and belongings on him, so this is taking people’s money and wealth undeservedly. Why is it called ‘bil Batil’? The wealth that they have sacrificed upon you, on the Day of Judgment when flocks of people will be gathered and when the procession of the saints will pass by people will say we gave things to Tahir ul Qadri or we fed Tahir ul Qadri. But Tahir ul Qadri would be nowhere to be seen. Those people would remain standing and those who had spent their wealth on the real Saints of God, the saints too would verify that the person did indeed spend his wealth on them. Thus, they would be granted salvation. One who is not even a saint; his procession will not pass by on the Day of Judgment and Tahir ul Qadri is one who is using the wealth of the people undeservedly. God has said the majority of people who are in this field are fakes; they are sitting as fake Sufis. When you serve such people you shall obtain nothing.
His Divine Eminence Gohar Shahi said, ‘Even if you did not feed a saint and a saint says to God that this person looked at me once out of love. That shall be enough to be granted salvation.’

The mention here has been of ‘bil Batil’, those who consume people’s wealth undeservedly. If you go and sit next to someone and have the conjecture that he is a Friend of God and you would be blessed through him but he is not connected to God, then whatever you have spent on him goes to waste. But spending your wealth upon those who are Friends of God, Faqir or Dervish is to flourish your fate. The Wahabbis and Deobandis use this verse for Friends of God and that is very misguiding! Giving gifts, money and your belongings to a fake Sufi or fake Guru, no matter what the intention may be, be it prosperity in this world or in the religion to obtain paradise or salvation is Batil.

Attached to it is the next segment ‘وَيَصُدُّونَ عَن سَبِيلِ اللَّـهِ’. How do these people create hurdles in the way of God? Do they tell someone not to offer Salat? Do they tell people to leave Islam? No. What does it mean then? His Divine Eminence Imam Mehdi Gohar Shahi has explained it.

HDE said, ‘One who is not a saint but claims sainthood, even if he is not a Kafir (Infidel) he reaches near Kufr and is the killer of 16 souls because the way of God is acquired through the subtleties of the breast. The way of God is acquired through the heart and soul. It is the heart that takes you to God. If you cannot awaken their souls and you have wasted them in their breast, once they have been wasted they will not be able to reach God.

To keep people under the impression that you are a Saint of God, Faqir, Dervish or Sufi but you do not possess the power and authority to awaken and enlighten anybody’s souls and put them on the Sirat al Mustaqeem (Straight Path), you do not have the power and authority to enlighten any heart (the heart is the passageway to God) then these souls inside a human go to waste and when these souls inside you have been wasted then the path to God has been closed upon you.

People who create hurdles in the way of God are those who are not saints but pose as fake Sufis, fake Gurus or fake inheritor of the saints and do not have the ability to enlighten souls and take them to God. A true saint would know how to enlighten the hearts and take them to God but the imposters do not know of this knowledge. Yet, people continue to serve them believing they are Saints of God, such as the likes of Tahir ul Qadri. People only get to hear stories about the love of the Prophet however Tahir ul Qadri has not been able to initiate anyone’s heart with God’s name through his spiritual glance. No one has acquired the image of the Lord on their soul nor has anyone acquired the knowledge of the Latifa-e-Ana (subtlety of the head) to see God from Tahir ul Qadri. But people who continue to go after him thinking he is a saint are destroying their inner souls and time and the day those souls are destroyed, the path to God will be closed upon them. Those who are not connected with God, whose inner is not enlightened and who have not been given any Spiritual Rank from God, taking gifts from people is prohibited and unlawful upon them (Haraam/Batil). People who run after such fake Sufis and are impressed by their physical austerities, outer appearance and their bookish knowledge, a time comes when their inner subtleties and souls are destroyed also; their time runs out. These people who are undeservedly consuming the wealth and belongings of people are also the means of preventing people from the way of God which is present within their breast.

You do not have the power to awaken the subtleties that were supposed to be engaged in Dhikr Allah (Remembrance of God) and now people are just engaging in Dhikr. They may continue to engage in Dhikr but a wall has been established inside the heart which is not allowing the Dhikr to penetrate the heart. So this is the hurdle in the way of God.

The third segment of the verse states:

وَالَّذِينَ يَكْنِزُونَ الذَّهَبَ وَالْفِضَّةَ وَلَا يُنفِقُونَهَا فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّـهِ فَبَشِّرْهُم بِعَذَابٍ أَلِيمٍ

Now the gold and silver that they have gathered from people, instead of using it in the way of God, they are making their palaces. So for those people this verse states, ‘Tell them, God has prepared his wrath for them.’

When this verse was sent down there were no fake Sufis or fake Gurus. Then, who was this verse for? The Jewish and Christian scholars at that time used to say, ‘We are also preaching the word of God. The Torah and Bible are God’s word also.’ But God rejected this. God said, ‘Okay, you are preaching the word of God, but you are not connected to me. Therefore whatever wealth you consume from people is undeserved. You have kept the Bible and the Torah but you are not connected to me. Why then are you using their wealth?’ If these people had joined Islam, Prophet Mohammad would have been sitting there, live, and if they sacrificed their wealth upon him, their fate would flourish. Prophet Mohammad was present and God said it in this context. You may be followers of Jesus or Moses and posses the divine book in your hands but you are not connected to God. The one sent by God as a Prophet is connected to God and if people sacrifice their wealth and belongings upon him, they would obtain something from it.

It is written in the Deen-e-Ilahi (Religion of God authored by HDE Gohar Shahi) that if common sinners serve a follower of Imam Mehdi, even they will obtain some spiritual rank, not just salvation.

Types of Lust and Nearness of the Heart and Soul

His Holiness Younus AlGohar's discourse on the types of lust, the effects of the 30,000 layers of lust on the heart and how to control the carnal desires. His Holiness also speaks about how marital issues lead to sexual frustration and, most importantly, the nearness of the heart and soul, what it means and how essential it is.

The following is a transcript of His Holiness Younus AlGohar's speech.

When you have lust and you have fits of lust, in that moment in time you feel compelled to be dragged into whichever position, into whichever direction your desires want to take you to and you do not seem to be in control. That is lust. In another words, like you are hungry and you eat and you feel content, you feel full but when you have sex and still there is no sign of fullness and there is always a burning desire to have more and more and more, and you never feel satisfied. This is a disease, and this is lust.

There are two types of lust. Number one: which is permitted by God and it is a permissible allowance. Then there is another type of lust, which is prohibited. [This is] when you see any woman and you feel crazy: you have this tingling, you get carried away and then you have sexual fantasies. When you see women and they are not approachable, oftentimes you just indulge in fantasies. You just think about it and this thinking is a form of fantasy. Now, the source of permissible lust is the Nafs (Self) and the source of prohibited lust is your heart. This is because there are 30,000 layers of lust which your heart is covered with; your heart is buried under these 30,000 layers of lust and no matter how religious you are, how dedicated a worshipper you are, these 30,000 layers of lust stay there. The only time the 30,000 layers of lust are removed from the heart is when your heart is initiated into spirituality. Then with the power of the Spiritual Master, these 30,000 layers of lust are removed permanently. After spiritual blessings, you should not have uncontrollable desires or you should not fantasise.

For example, it is like you live in a house and you have the keys of the house. There is a thief also and that thief has got a pair of keys to your house; when you are not there, he opens the door, gets inside the house and he knows every nook and cranny of your house.

In a similar way, the devil has the keys of your body and he runs through your blood. The problem is he is very clever; he only attacks on you in which area you are very weak.

For example, some people are more into money than women. Some other people are more into a woman than going after money. Some people just talk about sexuality and when it comes to the practical, they do not seem to do anything, for a number of reasons. Maybe they are not physically fit to do it or maybe they are scared of God. 'If I do it, I may go to hell,' so they do not practise it or fantasise about it. Some people have greed for money, some people have greed for lust, and some other people have some other defects in their character; it depends in which area that individual is very weak. Having desires, carnal desires, is not rare. If you are a man, you will definitely have desires.

Whether you are purified or not, you will still have some desires. Those who are purified, they have control over their desires and those who are impure, they do not have control on their desires.

Spirituality is all about discipline: how to discipline yourself and how to discipline your desires. Some people will watch and go through a Playboy magazine. They enjoy looking at the beautiful bodies and faces, however they are not yet ready enough to spill over. Nafs is the sole source of physical enjoyment, physical indulgence and fantasies. You might think fantasies are thinking about something; but in spirituality, the spiritual meaning of this fantasy, the practical side of fantasy is very dangerous. For example, if you are thinking about a woman and in your imagination you are doing everything - maybe in the beginning when you started visualising somebody in front of you and through your imagination you are doing what you would do if you were allowed to physically - then the subtlety of the Nafs from your body will leave and do everything that you were fantasising about. The amount of Naar (evil energy) which you would have when you did it physically, would be more when you did it with Nafs.

Prophet Mohammad said, 'If you are going through a marketplace and you see a woman and you feel attracted and lustful, go back home, sleep with your wife and come back. The lust will go away.'

Sometimes lust is not lust. It is frustration.

Because in our culture in Pakistan and also in India, the only time women put on good clothes are when they are getting married. But in the West, they do it everyday. They take care of their bodies and themselves. They wear make up in Pakistan, but they don’t know how to do it perfectly. When somebody sees his wife everyday in the same clothes, the hair is not combed properly and the face is not washed, there is no Roberto Cavalli perfume on the body and it is stinking; when the husband is really horny, and the other half is kind of put off and doesn’t feel any desire, the husband gets really pissed off. He may take it to his own hands. But there is a limit, one day he will find out it’s not a hand's job. So sometimes it is frustration, it is not lust.

This is why Prophet Mohammad said, 'The woman you want to marry, she has to be beautiful.' According to Quran, do you know what God said? 'All women, the faithful ones, they should beautify themselves everyday before their husbands arrive home and when their husbands arrive home, their enchanting beauty should please the heart of your husband.' But the priests in Islam twisted it. 'Don’t wear lipstick, don’t do this don’t do that'. Some Muslim women are so rigid in covering their body; they don’t show their body even to their husbands. I heard there is a place in the Arab world, especially some people in Egypt and also some Shiite, I heard somebody saying Hazrat Ali said, 'Your wife should not see you naked and you should not see your wife naked or you will become blind'. Somebody told me in America that some people in that region of the world make a hole in their outfits and this is how they sleep together; so they don’t see each others body. What an unpleasant way of having sex. Such an unpleasant way, it’s suicidal. But this comes from the priests in Islam, not from God. God is really romantic. God said in Quran that all women should beautify themselves and when their husbands arrive home you should be so beautiful to the eyes of your husband that he appreciates your beauty. But in our culture, it’s different. If there is an occasion somewhere, somebody is getting married, our women put on good clothes and as soon as they come back home they take them off and put the stinky ones again. Maybe this is why some people find it hard to cope with the absence of simplified sex and this could be a result of frustration. There are different forms of frustration. Sometimes a man has done a 10 hours shift in his cab and has seen 100 women and he feels horny, he goes back home and wants to enjoy himself but he doesn’t get to and he gets frustrated. I’m telling you what you go through everyday. A woman says it’s not important. To them what is important is to make food; 'It’s in the fridge'. Make food, take care of the kids and sleep, that’s all.

Hadith: If a husband asks his wife to sleep with him and his wife says to him,'No I am busy worshipping God', and she doesn’t come to him, then God said the angels curse that woman all night.

You are not letting your husband enjoy with you, rather you are in worship - but God doesn’t want it. The angels curse that woman all night. I think in other words, the job of a woman is not just to clean the house, take care of the kids and the kitchen, but more importantly it is to take care of the husband in fuller meaning of the phrase. Some of the people here do not have lust, it is frustration. Then you all know presentation is really important. The same woman without make-up and a shower will look like a cat. But if you do a little bit of photoshop work on her, make-up and shower, she might have a little appeal. This is why some people have this problem. Maybe you do not know whether you suffer from lust, but I know who suffers from lust. If you suffer from lust you should not sit with me. One who suffers from lust he releases so many spiritual insects, you cannot breathe properly.

Nearness is the nearness between the souls and between the hearts.

I tell you about one of the very important followers of Prophet Mohammad. At the time of Prophet Mohammad, Prophet Mohammad lived in Mecca and Medina in Saudi Arabia and there was a man called Owais. He was in Yemen. In those times, 1436 years ago, it’s less likely that Owais Karni would have sent an email to Prophet Mohammad. Muslims don’t pay attention. Who told Prophet Mohammad about Owais Karni? He lived in Yemen, 1436 years ago; there was no proper transportation system, no electronic communication available at that time. How did he know about Prophet Mohammad?

He never came to see Prophet Mohammad, but he is the most blessed one, why? Prophet Mohammad’s soul went to see him and blessed his soul.

And in the last days Prophet Mohammad sent some of his companions to him and Prophet Mohammad gave one of his shirts and said, 'Give it to him and ask him to pray for my followers.'

This was Spiritual Benevolence, a spiritual relationship between him and Prophet Mohammad. When the heart and soul is enlightened and there is a spiritual bond between the souls, then it doesn’t matter how far you are physically, you are still clung to the heart. You don’t have to be in the physical vicinity to be a loved one. You may be 100, 1,000 or 10,000 miles away, but still because of the spiritual bond you are close to the heart, close to the soul. However the spiritual bond must be established.
